Catholics are called to show Jesus’ actions in the world by seeing a problem/need and “Doing something about it”. This means showing Compassion to others like when Jeus showed Compassion to a woman caught in sin. Also when Jesus fed the 5000 he showed love and empathy to the people in the crowd by feeding them bread and fish. The two key themes I will be presenting in this essay are compassion, love and empathy shown by Jesus in scripture. These traits of compassion, love and empathy are all shown by Jesus seeing a need and doing something about that need.

In Mary Mackillop’s quote “Never see a need without doing something about it” we are challenged to see a problem and to resolve or help in it. In Jesus’s life he did this multiple times to help other people in the name of God. Jesus shows many admirable qualities in his life including Compassion to others around him. An example of this is when he caught a woman in sin and instead of stoning her for her sins her forgave her. This quote “And from now on do not sin again” shows us that after the encounter Jesus showed her compassion by letting her go and she lived a faithful life from there on. Jesus showing compassion to the woman in that passage is like Mary Mackillop seeing a need and “doing something about it.” He saw that the woman was in pain and regretful for her actions so he helped her regain her life and he forgave her sins just like Mary does. This passage shows us the model for Christian living as in real life we should show compassion to others. Like in the story, if we “see a need” and to show compassion “do something about it” then we are following Jesus’ values. Ways to show compassion could be to help somebody hurt, to donate to a charity or to commit time to help others in your community. “Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.” This quote from the passage could inspire people to change their lives for God and they may never sin again. Jesus in his life shows many times to us that he helps people and shows them compassion. He does this in a way that he sees a need and does something about it. Jesus in the passage showed compassion for the woman caught in sin.

“Never see a need without doing something about it”. This is a famous quote from Mary Mackillop that tells us to always help people if they need it. One of Jesus’ key themes is that he shows empathy to all the people he meets. Jesus showed the value of empathy many times in his life and when he saw a need he showed empathy and with it. In the story Jesus feeds the 5000 he shows empathy to all he meets baby feeding all the people that came to see him preach. This passage shows empathy as he was nice and felt sad for the people who came to visit him as they were hungry when it came to dusk. In this passage where Jesus fed his 5000 followers it relates to the stimulus by him “seeing the need” of the hungry people and him “doing something about '' by feeding them bread and fish with the crumbs of the others. Like Mary Mackillop, Jesus does this quote many times throughout his life on planet earth and in heaven. Jesus’ words in this passage provides a model for Christian living by showing us that in our world their are lots of hungry people. This inspired people like Doris Taylor MBE who created Meals on Wheels in South Australia and was founded in 1954. Ever since volunteers have served food to the homeless and poor who can’t afford much food with their wages or no wages at all. Many people also were inspired by this quote and donated money to the hungry or homeless so they could buy a meal for themselves. As seen in the scripture passage Matthew 14:13-21 Jesus shows his hungry followers empathy which inspires people in our world to donate meals to meals on wheels or the homeless. This show of empathy to Jesus’ followers is like him seeing a need of his hungry followers and he solved it by feeding them bread and fish.

As we see in the themes compassion and empathy, Jesus is just like Mary as he “sees his need” of the woman caught in sin and the hungry 5000. And does something about it like forgiving the woman and feeding the hungry on a limited amount of bread and fish. This inspires us as Christians to live our life with compassion and empathy like Jesus with the quote of “Never see a need without doing something about it”
