I would be willing to bet you a million dollars that you are reading this article using some sort of technological device. Whether that be a phone, tablet, or computer. Technology has become such a huge part of our world that it’s almost impossible to imagine a world without it. Everyone talks about how “great” technology is. I will admit, in some instances, it can be useful; however, have you ever thought about how technology could actually be hurting the world as we speak? There are several reasons why technology is more harmful than helpful. Living in a world where technology is everywhere, we often communicate through texting rather than having one on one conversations.  Not only does it decrease our social time, but it also takes away a lot of joy that we would otherwise have. Technology also can be dangerously addictive. If things don’t change, this world as we know it will be completely transformed– in a bad way!

One of many reasons why technology is harmful is because it completely changed how we communicate with one another. With everything we have to talk to our friends and family like messages, Instagram, Snapchat, or Facebook, the less time we get to spend with the people we truly care about. It is so easy to just text or someone if you want to chat. It may seem like the more we text people or comment on their posts the less lonely we will feel; however, the more we avoid these social interactions, the more isolated we will start to feel. It is much better to talk face to face rather than digitally through a screen. In “The Pedestrian '', there is not an actual police inside of the car, it is an automated robot. If this life continues at the rate it is going, in the near future, we may not have any police in the cars either, which is a very scary thought.

Another reason why technology is hindering society is that it steals our joy. We are constantly distracted by the buzz of our cellphones that we forget to enjoy life. In “The Pedestrian”, we see Mead going on a walk and as he looks around he sees no one. They have all locked themselves inside their homes and have invested themselves into a brightly lit box, also known as a television. Mead is coming to the realization that all of these people are missing out. There is so much more to life than technology and the sad truth about that is some people don’t understand it.
