“This was the best night of my life”, six-year-old me said to my father after my first Taylor Swift concert. The air was blistering, the lights were beaming- everything was perfect. Although a young child will never fully understand that nothing in this world is perfect, I refused to look at this night as anything less than flawless. Since this summer day in 2011, Taylor Swift has had a potent influence over my life and probably always will.

Taylor Swift has a way of evoking her listeners with heart-wrenching lyrics. “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” is my favorite song by far. Although this song focuses on a breakup, I am somehow able to relate to her message. My favorite Taylor Swift lyric reads “I'm a crumpled-up piece of paper lying here”. I've been in many friendships that fit this exactly. You go from being best friends with someone and then they leave you like it was the easiest thing in the world to do. It made me feel like a crumpled-up piece of paper and maybe even worse. Although this is the most draining feeling in the world, I gained a new understanding and was able to move on with an open heart and an open mind. I am worth more than how other people treat me and I truly believe I am deserving of all the world has to offer.

Music has always been my escape. There has never been a time when I haven't been able to connect my personal life to a Taylor Swift song. On Taylor Swift’s debut album, a popular song is “A Place In This World”. This song is for the escapists- the dreamers. She talks about beginning a new journey. Along with these dreams, there is also fear and worry that her dreams may not come true. Swift sings “I'll be strong, I'll be wrong, oh but life goes on”. Specifically, during the summer going into junior year, I got into a huge argument with someone who I considered to be my best friend. Although it was a mutual argument, I can acknowledge that I was wrong for going back and forth with her. Even though losing my best friend was nothing less than devastating, I had to be strong and not let her words take hold of my character. She made me feel like an outcast- someone who people wouldn't want to hang out with. As all of these harsh feelings subsided after time, I realized that not every day will be amazing. There will always be bad days but I use my hardships as motivation in order to persevere in my future.

When I was in sixth grade, I started watching the show Grey’s Anatomy. I set my heart on becoming a nurse or working somewhere in the medical field. As if Taylor didn't already captivate me with her music, she drew me in even more when she wrote a song completely dedicated to healthcare workers and their sacrifices in and out of the hospital. In the song “Epiphany”, Swift vocalizes, “Doc, I think she’s crashing out… With you I serve, with you I fall down, down. Watching you breathe in, watch you breathing out, out”. Through these lyrics, she talks about the trauma suffered by nurses and doctors. I’ve always wanted to be a nurse anesthetist and this song truly pushes me to accomplish that goal. I plan to major in nursing so I am able to help people and make a difference in this world by making sacrifices for those who aren't as healthy as I am. It’s a blessing to be healthy and I want to dedicate my life to the health of others.

Life has been a rollercoaster- throwing challenges at me when I least expect them. Although so much has affected me, Taylor Swift and her music have always been a constant in my life. Every mood, every feeling, every single thing happening in my life, Taylor Swift has helped me through it. As cliche as it sounds, I'd like to say that her music saved me. For an extended period of time, I would rethink my purpose- wondering why someone like myself should have to go through so much pain and hurt. I then realized that I am never given pain without purpose and through this purpose, I find peace.
