About 96% of teens in the U.S tend to struggle with their reading fluency and vocabulary. Did you also know that people who read have better vocabulary skills by 26% compared to people who don’t read? Not only that, but reading also helps us with our communication and comprehension skills.  This is why Hallie Wells Middle School needs to have a Reading Club that will meet on Wednesday during lunch and let kids choose a book they want to read and let them read it at their own pace. My club will help kids learn their vocabulary skills and also their comprehension skills that you will most likely get in tests and quizzes.

To start with, a reason that students in HWMS need a reading club is that reading can help students increase their test scores for tests like cognitive tests, reading comprehension, etc. According to the cognitive test’ done by Reading & Literacy Discovery on kids who read and kids who didn’t read as much, it shows that “ In addition to brain scans, the children were also given cognitive tests. When it came to screen time, kids who used screens more than one hour a day had poorer emerging literacy skills, less ability to use expressive language, and tested lower on the ability to rapidly name objects. In contrast, children who frequently read books with their caregiver scored higher on cognitive tests.” (This is your child’s brain on books: Scans show benefit of reading vs. screen time pg.19) This shows how reading can assist students in their compassion and cognitive skills which can help them score better on tests like Map-R, Mcap, Sat, etc. Thanks to the implored reading club the fellow student body of Hallie Wells will get these benefits that are listed.

The following reason our school needs a reading club is that it helps fellow students learn new things and can help their communication skills. According to “Reading” by Gale it states “people around the world read every day to find useful information, learn new skills, communicate with others, and entertain themselves.¨( Reading by gale pg.1) This proves that HWMS needs a reading club due to it states how reading can help people find useful information and help people communicate with others. In the reading club, students will learn these skills like communication with each other and will get the benefits needed from reading a book.

The last reason the student body of HWMS needs a reading club is that reading can help the vocabulary skills of students in HWMS. As proclaimed in the article “Road to reading: early steps to help children become readers” by Resource Links. “The various outcomes of reading to and with children are expounded including aspects of language development - vocabulary development, sentence construction, and grammar; acquisition of listening and comprehension skills;”( Road to reading: early steps to help children become readers pg.1) This supports the requested club because it shows how reading can help vocabulary skills and your sentence construction. That also means the reading club and the students who will join it will have these advantages when they read.

In conclusion, a  reading club is necessary to have at HWMS for many reasons. In spite of funding and finding a space for the club. They are many more advantages that will depose the disadvantages. These are the following reasons our school needs a reading club that will always benefit the well-being of the student body of HWMS.
