Plastic Surgery is seen as a modern-day arrangement for changing the undesired portion or parts of the body. Individuals these days feel the need to alter their physical appearance in order to remain in vogue or meet their desired look. Within the current years, plastic or cosmetic surgeries, to be more particular, are on the rise due to simple access and relatively low costs. There are various reasons why people seek plastic surgery, and there are numerous complications that can happen due to it. In this essay, I will be breaking down the causes and effects of plastic surgery.

One of the major causes of seeking plastic surgeries is the impact of modern-day media on society. Moreover, the media and body image are firmly related due to the excessive amount of exposure we have to the images we see within the media. Beauty has been categorized by the media as numerous particular features, whether it may be a thin body shape and a ‘flat stomach’ or high cheekbones and a tiny nose. No matter how falsifying those pictures appear, individuals still tend to believe what they see and still confuse reality with plastic surgery.

Studies have shown that over 87% of people nowadays get plastic surgery due to false representations on social media and its definition of “beauty”. Many tend to get cosmetic surgery once, then get addicted. They get so addicted to the point where they ruin their face completely and become unrecognizable, instead of making them look elegant and alluring they end up looking horrifying and deformed. Not only does it affect you physically, but it also affects you mentally and psychologically. Constantly seeing fake and unrealistic beauty standards can lower one's self-esteem tremendously. Regardless of the number of procedures they do, they still won't feel satisfied, they'll start to pick on every small imperfection until they can no longer bear looking in the mirror. They become crazed in perfecting an unrealistic fantasy. One can become so depressed with this mindset and may take it as far as self-harm.
