Introduction

Nursing is known as the helping profession and is centered on the care of others in need. Being a part of the nursing community gives an opportunity to change peoples lives for the better. Nursing is a profession that is never ending and leaves room for more education as well as new knowledge. Nursing poses as something different for everyone. Everyone enters this profession with an interest and an intent. Some enter nursing due to their previous experiences and outside influences, both relating to the desire to help others.

Choosing the Nursing Profession

There are many reasons why choosing the nursing profession was the correct choice for me. I chose this profession because of my personal values as well as the impact of my family. I believe strongly in helping others in need and that I have the ability to provide adequate patient care. Being able to help others has always been my number one priority in life. The feeling of making others feel better always put a smile on my face. My family has helped me through my decision process of entering the nursing field. My mother was a WOCN for the majority of her lifetime and watching her progress in her education and knowledge has made me interested in this profession from a young child. Seeing her overall enjoyment with how she was able to help others has showed me how important this profession truly is.

My Direction in Nursing

There are many different fields within the nursing profession, meaning anyone can go in any direction they want. Personally, I am still unsure about what direction I would want to go into due to my lack of experience. I enjoy working with geriatrics because I recently received my CNA certification, but I am uncertain if I’d want to stay in that department. I always thought of myself as a fast worker and a good problem solver, which makes me think of working in the Emergency Room (ER). I’ve heard many stories from other nurses who have worked in the ER, and I’ve always enjoyed how they compose themselves and do they right thing to help those in need. My experiences in the ER are limited but influential. I’ve been to the ER for myself, my friends, my parents, and grandparents. Each time I was in the ER I always watched the nurses and tried to figure out why they did what they did to help us.

Striving to be the Best Nurse

I strive to be like those ER nurses who helped all of us get better or at least make us comfortable for the time being. I want to be able to help others they way those ER nurses helped me. In doing this, I can become the best nurse I can be by continuing to experience new things. I will continue my education to the best of my ability and have the capacity to integrate my new skills in my nursing practice. I will do my best to incorporate client centered care in every situation. Focusing on the client can establish trust and respect within the relationship between the client and the nurse. I want to be able to provide adequate care and compassion to my clients to be able maintain a comfortable environment for them and their families.

Nursing Theorist

The nursing profession is constantly evolving due to the influencers in the past. In the beginning years of nursing, this profession was not held in the highest regard from their peers. A specific nursing theorist that I can relate to is Isabel Hampton Robb. This theorist contributed to the improvement of education and the importance of nursing school (Petiprin, 2020). Robb’s theory of advancing education was able to help nurses improve their education to be better nurses. To me, my education is important, and I want to be able to make a difference in someone’s life based on my skills and experiences. Within this profession, there is always room for improvement and more experiences. I believe Robb was able to show nurses how important education truly was to perfect this profession to the best of her ability. Without the education put in place during her time, I think the nursing profession would’ve been skewed from the way it is now.

Conclusion

The profession of nursing means something different for every person. Within this profession, a person is able to help others out of their own desire. In doing this, those people are showing compassion and respect. The education and knowledge of nursing is never ending and will continue to inspire others to continue their path through this profession. The nursing theorists in past has set down the steppingstones for future nurses to create their own direction based on their values and beliefs. I would like to expand my knowledge to the fullest and be the best nurse I can be.
