Missy Moreno in We Can Be Heroes Movie Essay Example

In the movie, We Can Be Heroes by Robert Rodriguez, the Earth's superheroes' kids must work together to save their parents and the planet when alien invaders capture them. As a group, the children have to work together even though one of them is different from the rest. The character Missy Moreno in this movie serves as an excellent example of social class representation.      

There is one main protagonist in the movie named Missy Moreno. She is the whip-smart preteen daughter of Marcus Moreno. The children of Heroics come together after their parents were kidnapped during an alien invasion to save them. Her intelligence and her ability to speak well make her an excellent role model. Despite her lack of known superhero powers or qualities, she shows great leadership skills and can get a room full of people to listen to her words instantly. She shows a high level of intelligence and quick thinking. Her hair is long, brown, and wavy. Wearing a black shirt with a little skeleton and a speech bubble of a heart, she says "leave me alone". In addition to a necklace, she wears a communication bracelet to help her communicate with her father.

A person's social class can be identified by the way they act and how they are perceived by other people as members of a certain group. A government organization manages the Heroics, along with the American president, which suggests they belong to a higher social class than others. It is assumed that characters with superpowers are of a higher social class than those without. Due to Missy Moreno's lack of superpowers, she was looked down upon, which shows that she is of a lower social class than those with powers.

Upon finding out that Missy didn't have any superpowers like them, the other kids treated her like she was poorer. Throughout the movie, they realized that she did not have to have superpowers to save their parents from the aliens. As the team of young heroes rescued their parents, she guided them with her leadership skills and powerful voice. When they encountered bad obstacles, she always found a way around them and everything worked out.

Many people weren't confident she would be able to help as she did not possess any powers, but she proved them wrong, and by the end of the movie, everyone understood that she was a very important part of their group and if they hadn't had her then they could not have accomplished their mission as effectively.

Ms. Granada took Missy from class to take her back to the Heroics Headquarters, where other superhero children are being told to do schoolwork in the classroom. Ms. Granada left the room and all the children began using their powers and making a ruckus, which is when some of the children approached her and introduced themselves and all the other children around them. One particular individual, Wild Card, was a self-proclaimed leader who thought that he was superior to everyone and they had to listen to him. When she got asked about her power but she didn't have one, Wild Card took it upon himself to tease her about it constantly and make sure everyone knew she was powerless. Eventually, Wild Card realized that just because she doesn't have powers does not mean she cannot be a team leader. As she was finding solutions to problems no one else could, he knew that she is more than capable of leading.  

Leaders don't necessarily have to be from higher or lower social classes, no matter their role in society, that shouldn't determine everything they do. Almost anyone is capable of being a team leader and having excellent leadership skills, they just need to be given a chance before deciding. Higher social classes tend to make them more successful in developing career aspirations and are sometimes better prepared for the world of work, with better access to resources. Whereas those who are in the lower social class are the opposite of that, their opportunities and access to resources are limited and restricted. 

Seeing Missy's leadership skills should encourage audiences that anyone can make a difference without superpowers. It does not matter if someone is the same as the other members, there are always other ways they can contribute to a mission. Someone must be there to lead a group to success whenever a situation stands between them and their mission.
