There are many skills I would love to master in life, and I had trouble trying to decide what to choose. Some of the contenders were observation or adaptability, but I am already very observant and quite adaptive. As I struggled with the choice, I realized the perfect skill, decisiveness. It is a quality I have been striving to improve about myself due to my indecisive nature. This skill is so important to me since it plays a substantial part in everyday life. It is also extremely important in the medical field, which is the career path I have chosen to pursue.

As humans, we are presented with a multitude of choices every day ranging from what to eat for breakfast to which job offer to accept. Dealing with all of these choices and decisions can be overwhelming and quite stressful. Struggling with decision-making can be debilitating, over-thinking and second-guessing every choice and option can be an immense setback and possibly force someone to rely on others to make decisions for them.

With that said, being decisive is not just about making a quick decision, It's about being confident in your ability to weigh all options and produce an informed answer. I, along with countless others, often wonder whether or not we have made the right choice. For some, it takes days or weeks to weigh all the options, but in the majority of situations, that kind of time does not exist.

With my ambitions of becoming a doctor, I must be able to make quick, informed decisions regarding patient care. Of course, there is always the option to ask for second opinions, but that cannot be something to rely on. Trust in oneself is a significant factor of adequate decision-making. When working under pressure in a fast-paced environment or faced with a life and death situation, there will be no time for indecisive behavior. Consequently, leaving no choice but to rely on prior knowledge and observation to make an informed, split-second decision. Having another person’s life and future in your hands is why decisiveness is so important.

Although there are many other life skills that I still need to master, this one stuck out to me, and I ultimately chose it as a result of decisiveness being something I have always wanted to improve about myself. It is not only helpful in the medical field but life in general. Making decisions, big and small can be quite stressful, but being indecisive on top of that only makes it worse. After struggling to choose a skill, I was further convinced that this is the perfect one for me to master.
