In 1998, Shawn Mendes was born in Pickering, Ontario, where he spent most of his childhood showing off his talents on the social media platform Vine. The acoustic guitar is the best talent of Shawn Mendes. The singing career of Shawn would be known throughout the world when he won the Ryan Seacrest cover competition with the song “Say Something” by A Great Big World. One of the first mainstream label musicians who discovered Shawn was Andrew Gertler, who was able to sign Shawn to Island Records. Shawn Mendes, through his musical talent, has become one of the greatest artists to be in the music genre. He manages to infuse personal events from his life onto his music. Shawn Mendes utilizes music to express love, to reflect life lessons, and to show interpersonal vulnerability. Is Shawn Mendes the best lyricist of all time?

Shawn Mendes presents love in his songs to represent his current dating life, or past relations that have ended poorly. “When Your Gone” is the song that most embodies the showing of love. Camilla Cabello and Shawn Mendes dated for over two years. There is a lot of regret for him in how their relationship ended. Shawn Mendes writes sadly “I didn’t know that loving you was the happiest I’ve ever been/So I’m just tryna hold on” (“When Your Gone” lines 12-13). Life had been at an all-time high, however, the reality of that time being gone causes Shawn to struggle. These lessons about the heartbreak that Shawn experienced have been part of the major lessons he has learned in his young life.

Over the last 24 years, Shawn has learned a lot over incidents in his life, or just by facing life forward as it goes.

It is shown that Shawn had many ups and downs throughout his life. In an article Gabriella Paiella writes “Considering the 23-year-old three-time Grammy nominee experienced a nearly career-ending struggle with anxiety in recent years, it’s an impressive amount of emotional control”(Paragraph 1). The stress and commitment to being a superstar put a wall in front of his music career, which is expressed in the song “In My Blood”. It shows the dark times Shawn went through, and his solution to fix it. Shawn writes the saddening words, “Laying on the bathroom floor, feeling nothing/I’m overwhelmed and insecure give me something” (“In My Blood” Lines 5-6). He is calling out for help as he can’t deal with so much pressure from being overwhelmed. He is now scared to put his full self out into the public. Mendes uses his music as an inspiration to also inspire people to break out of their shells. Shawn writes, “Sometimes I feel like giving up/But I just can’t/It isn’t in my blood” (“In My Blood” Lines 17-19). It can be inferred the biggest failure for Shawn would be giving up. Not giving up has led to Shawn Mendes having one of the best musical careers.

Shawn has put his identity into his music. Turning his love life into lyrics, he can express his past relationships. Figuring out flaws has allowed perfection into much of his musical career. Trying not to fail himself, he left behind his biggest insecurities in search of stardom. Shawn Mendes is one of the best lyricists of all time.
