Destraction. Destraction. Destraction. People within this modern society become distracted by life and become ignorant to what is going on around them. People lose track of everything when it comes to venturing out and fetching items. Marketing is a huge culprit of this. Marketing tactics are set up to draw people into the world of products. Marketing is similar to the idea of the Allegory of the Cave. Marketing captures and deceives its consumers by using special tactics and making consumers feel more comfortable; therefore, shackling and keeping consumers inside the cave. 

People are often kept comfortable when they view or have products or items that they like. Place and technology are often an exceptional way to keep people comfortable in different environments as seen in Fahrenheit 451. Bradbury states in his book, Fahrenheit 451, that his characters prefer to be with their “family”, which refers to 30 images of people in a parlor, instead of being with others and exploring outside of their comfort (Bradbury 97). Bradbury’s statement shows that people in his society need to be comfortable. Comfort keeps people content and keeps them from having a strenuous amount of anxiety when it comes to things that are new and different. With this idea of comfort comes the idea of materialist comfort. Bradbury brings up the idea that people are fed ideas by stating, “It’s a lot of… wine when it’s not”(Bradbury 27). Bradbury uses this idea to show that people depend on materialistic items to make them feel comfortable. People within society strive for comfort and will ignore signs and will continuously run after it. Comfort is  built into the human mind and system. People constantly strive for comfort and will stay shackled despite being told that they are wrong. Bradbury’s book shows this by depicting his characters in ways that humans would naturally act in that society. They are shackled to their comfort and are being told lies by their government, which they are not willing to question because it could mean that their comfort gets taken away.

People become distracted from their goals often when they are in comfortable places. Different environments for people can be stressful; therefore, technology and distraction can help soothe that by making a person comfortable. Distraction is a notable way to encourage people to stray away from their goals because it allows for them to be almost hypnotized by something  because they want to know or understand what it is. People have a tendency to look for more of an item or product they like because it is human nature. Author of “Digital Marketers: It’s time to emerge from Plato’s Cave!”, Anders Hjorth, states that people are drawn into digital marketing schemes because of digital bots learning our data and analyzing it (Hjorth 2). Bots read people's information to help obtain a unique understanding of what they like and what to display. A considerable amount of people don’t understand this concept because no one really knows about it. This shows that people are shackled to their own habits of searching and browsing, which eventually leads to unnecessary buying and purchasing of products. The idea of bots reading peoples data often leaves an uneasy feeling for a significant amount of people, but people do not realize that companies that have these bots are often the puppeteer behind the puppet. Hjorth claims that favorable companies like Google pay third parties to display their products to consumers who are looking for those products, which allows them free traffic for their company and products (Hjorth 3). Favorable companies are able to pay for trafficking of their own products. The trafficking allows for their products to be viewed more often; therefore, allowing people to view them more often, eventually wanting to acquire them. People are easily distracted when they are browsing and come across items or products that they are interested in. People want to be able to have what they want because they desire it, so when favorable companies allow for trafficking of their products all across the internet, they are able to have that satisfaction of people buying their products.

Some people might argue that marketing is beneficial for a successful business, which allows people to be able to make their own choices within a certain guidelines.businesses need to be able to profit in some way. An article called “In Store Marketing” states that in order for businesses to make money from customers, businesses need to promote impulse buying (“In Store” 10). Stores and Businesses are not able to thrive without consumers. Although some people might argue that marketing strategies are beneficial, they are not beneficial to the consumers. The “In Store Marketing” article states that in order for a store to keep business from consumers they must set the mood or environment which benefits the business rather than the consumer (“In Store” 16). Businesses use tactics like keeping a store clean, blocking out light so people lose track of time, displaying items that appeal to certain audiences, and music. Businesses are desperate for attention from consumers because it means that they receive attention. Many people argue that it is beneficial when in reality, it is only beneficial to the company or business.

Distraction is key in keeping people from realizing what is going on around them which helps keep consumers oblivious to their surroundings; therefore, keeping them shackled. Consumers are often victims of distractions from substantial retail companies. An article called “Marketing Psychology” states that colors keep consumers’ attention while distracting them from their actual goals (FE International 4). Keeping a consumer’s attention is the goal of every company because it ensures that their business is getting the attention that it needs. Keeping a consumer’s attention is not the only thing that marketers want. FE International claims that companies will use the idea of social proof to help imprint the idea that consumers want the products (FE International 12). Social proof allows for companies to spread awareness of their products by going through another source that has more or an influence on consumers, similar to how influences like Kim Kardashian promote certain products that are her own. Large corporations and businesses want to be able to disperse their products out and to the consumers as fast as they can because they want money. People who work with these companies are fueled by the idea of money rather than humanity.
