Admission Essay Sample: SCAD

No one in my immediate family has graduated from college. My mother was the only one to attend but shortly dropped out. Without a doubt, my proudest moments at BHS are when I decided what I wanted to go to college for, that I would be the first to attend and graduate, and when I was accepted.

For all of my life, I assumed I’d go to college after high school because that’s what everyone around me said they were going to do. All of my peers had already decided on what career path they were going to pursue and had rounded down which colleges they wanted to apply for. I couldn’t find what interested me. I thought I’d have it figured out by high school, but nothing I tried fit. BHS helped me explore different options through the various electives they provide, but I still felt lost. I was starting to think I was falling behind everyone else. When Covid-19 hit, things took a turn for the worse. Because of this, many students decided online schooling was the safest option, myself included. My mental health suffered, as did my grades. My GPA dropped significantly, and I lost all hope for college. I figured it was for the best since I couldn't decide on what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go anyway. 

Now I am in the second semester of my senior year. A couple of months ago, a SCAD alumna came to my Art class and showed us her prepared demonstration explaining all the different opportunities they provide and classes you can take there. I was immediately drawn to the fashion and fashion marketing majors. I finally knew what I wanted to do, but I doubted the chances of me being accepted. My teacher assured me there was no harm in trying, and I got in. BHS is responsible for SCAD coming to speak to my class, and I am forever grateful for that.

In the future, I plan to pursue a career in the fashion industry or fashion marketing field. I plan on taking every opportunity SCAD offers to push my career further. A long-term goal I have is the hope to attend Paris Fashion Week because of how much I could learn from the experience. I believe SCAD is the place that can get me there, and it's thanks to BHS that I took the time to apply.
