On average, 93 million selfies are taken daily on android devices in the entire world, and most of them are taken by teenagers. This figure is not so very surprising because I have seen a lot of people take selfies including me.  Ordinarily, the process doesn’t just end with people taking selfies; people then nitpick selfies and then compare them with people they see online and sometimes even post them on social media. So, selfies, from my point of view can be is a way for today’s generation to validate their appearance, a cry for attention, and rarely as a way to capture moments.

Selfies aren’t all bad, though. There is hardly anyone out there who can really say that they have never taken a selfie and if someone out there has really never taken a selfie I would like to help them take one because as many downsides selfies have, we cannot not be thankful for being able to capture selfies and relive them whenever we feel like. There is nothing wrong with wanting to save smiles on a memory card. Selfies have also played a major part in the self-acceptance process of teenagers. So many teenagers have started believing in themselves because of selfies. A lot of influencers and celebrities have posted their selfies on social media showing their insecurities and helping teenagers to love themselves, helping people like them and overcome their doubts. They have helped create awareness for mental health, body positivity, etc. But, selfies have both upsides and downsides. For instance, even though selfies have enabled a lot of people to accept themselves, it also has created self-doubt in a few others. So selfies being positive or negative is clearly ambiguous.

We shouldn’t completely disregard selfies and think of them as bad influence. There is nothing wrong with wanting to capture memories and sometimes even reassuring yourself about the way you look, but just not the number of selfies that are taken should be decreased as they consume a lot of time and are slowly turning into an addiction. In spite of this, we should be able to take selfies unapologetically because now that we live in an age where selfies play a big role in everyone’s life, from taking them to being influenced by them, I can’t imagine living in a world without selfies being taken and shared on social media. My thoughts on selfies are that even though they are now becoming toxic, they don’t have to be turned into a taboo just yet. We should be able to enjoy them as much as our previous generations have enjoyed their perks.
