Today’s teenagers are impacted by suicide and it is caused by mental illness, depression, and life changes.

An aspect that suicide has a role in is mental illness. Mental illness remains unattended.  Most of the mental illnesses today remain unreported, unattended and undiagnosed(Nishtha). Studies have consistently shown that teens who commit suicide often suffer from serious mental health problems such as depression and substance abuse,(Peggy 47).̈  Also, Mental illness contributes to 7% of the global average disease burden(Nishtha¨). This affects teens because in a negative way as more teens who commit suicide suffer from serious illness and they go under the radar. This also affects their friends and family members. This is bad as the identity of a teenager gets ruined because it creates a feeling which teens can not overcome that leads them to suicide. Mental illness is one of the reasons why teens suffer through depression and commit suicide.

Depression is one of the leading causes of teenage suicide(Peggy 16). Firstly, the levels of chemical signals (neurotransmitters) called serotonin and dopamine are abnormal Serotonin signals wellbeing and happiness to our brains while dopamine induces motivation. Secondly, the brain tissue is sometimes shrunken. Third, the ability to form new neurons and connections or repair and modify old ones is impaired. Lastly, immunity modulators called cytokines, which induce sickness behavior like staying indoors, sleeping a lot and generally, low energy levels are found in excessively high amounts in depressed individuals (̈Nishtha ̈). This affects teens as over 90% of them are affected by it (Peggy 16). Depression affects teenagers as it is not only one of the leading causes of suicidal, it affects most teens.

Another aspect that suicide has a role in is life changes. Teens going through major life changes (ex. Parent divorce) have a higher chance of going through suicidal thoughts( Peggy 17).  Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24-year-old(Peggy 27). This is not a coincidence. Also, Teens who have been victims of bullying have a higher chance of suicidal thoughts (Peggy 33). These impact a teenagers´ identity in a negative way as teens feel more perplexed and anxious when going through these rough life changes in their lives which could ultimately lead to their demise.
