Strengthening resiliency is critical in constructing a holistic approach to health that addresses both physical and psychological aspects. 

Looking at these words separately to start with “resilience” shows how someone can face new situations and people with confidence, the ability to be able to define realistic goals with optimism and to show positive self-esteem and self-image. Wellbeing is simply defined as “The state of being comfortable, healthy or happy” (Oxford Languages,2021) and when brought together, we see the relationship between resilience and wellbeing is that they are linked and go hand in hand. Your resilience depends on the state of your mental wellbeing and your mental wellbeing is shaped from the moment you are born. 

A person’s life starts from the moment they are conceived to when they die. The in-between stage of their life is full of events that shape their ‘wellbeing’ such as, experiences, ambitions as well as, positive or negative things that happen in our lives. Trauma can damage the mind in lots of ways and this damage isn’t always clear straightaway, it could take years until they’re faced with a similar experience which would then resurface and impact their wellbeing. For instance, parents who constantly argue can cause a child or young person mental trauma, this may not resurface for them until they are in a relationship and have an argument themselves impacting their mental wellbeing. However, if they are already resilient and this is the only trauma, they have suffered it may not affect them. On the other hand, the “Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study.” Looked into the adverse events that affect people in their childhoods and the developmental risk factors of illness and disease in later life found that people who have suffered adverse childhood experiences may be more likely to smoke, drink alcohol and take drugs leading to health-risk behaviours so, it may come down to the strong mental wellbeing of the individual. 

Resilience can be built in many ways exercise being one. Some people go for a run and forget about their problems and just focus on their next goal which would be reaching the next kilometre on the other hand some people will use this alone time to focus on their stresses and concerns and be able to think through their worries and clear their head and due to the releasing of endorphins they will be in a positive mood helping their wellbeing and resilience. If you aren’t a very active person and exercising doesn’t appeal to you then connecting with other people is also a great way to build your resilience just by listening and being listened to, there are also support groups available if friends and family aren’t an option. 

Overall, your life stages and events will affect your life and build your resilience while you are healthy maintaining your wellbeing. Throughout your path, you can follow ways in which you can positively build your mental wellbeing to make you resilient.
