The essays “Drowning in Dishes, but Finding a Home” and “The Work You Do, the Person You Are” does portray the message that having a job as a teen is beneficial. Through the two essays, the reader can predict that although the experiences were different, the author felt they benefited them in a positive way.

In the essay “Drowning in Dishes, but Finding a Home” the author Danial Adkison expresses his experience while working in a Pizza Hut. Even though he had a rough start as being a dishwasher, soon he was moved up and taught many life lessons through his work career. “Pizza Hut became not only my escape from home but also, in many ways, an alternate home.” This quote proves evidence to show that this job didn't just change his professional life but also his personal life. Jeff, Danials manager, played an enormous role in his life and cared for him like family. “Jeff surprised me with an early graduation present: a trip to Boston.” Jeff surprising Dnaial with a visit to his dream college shows how much he cares for him out of work. Danial Adkison proves that a teen having a job is beneficial and teaches life lessons.

In Toni Morrison’s essay “The Work You Do, the Person You Are” the author uses powerful phrases and short sentences to convey the message that working as a teen is important. Wanting to provide for her family, the author has a job where she feels extremely below her employer. “Listen. You don't live there. You live here. With your people. Go to work. Get your money. And come on home.” The author's dad tells her in very short and strict phrases that work is not a place to like. Although the other essay enjoyed his work, Toni Morrison still learned many beneficial lessons in her work history. “, but since that conversation with my father, I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself,” This quote proves that the narrator learned self-worth through her job. “The Work You Do, the Person You Are” demonstrates a powerful message about how a teen job can be a positive in the teen's life.
