Being exposed to Western media from a very young age, I grew up aware and familiar with the cultural contexts and the influence such forms of media have on the modern world’s landscape. It has always fascinated me how the media always seem to directly correlate to the culture from whence it developed, or as I later discovered, the unique shaping power mainstream entertainment and mass communication have on society. I aspire to participate and contribute in such an environment where creativity is valued for the impact it has. The Media BA provided by UCL is my intended programme after finishing the UPC course for this reason.

A particular work I find expertly demonstrated this connection is an academic article called There are no Visual Media by W.J.T. Mitchell, in which, as a support to the thesis, Mitchell established that most forms of traditional media can not be consumed wholly without the support of existing context, and referred to it as an essential component of the art. I believe new media plays the role of defining and transforming society in addition to that, as it is the first way in which we are often introduced to radical ideas or the critiques of such.

Being a member of both the student council and the yearbook committee, I worked with over 30 other students in managing frequent events for a school of over 1000 students. During the second year, I became a mentor to younger members, being in charge of a filming project for the school’s social media. I quickly became engrossed in the work, and picked up on editing, graphic designing, directing and many more in my own time, before moving on to collaborate with social projects using these abilities. Through this, I engaged in meaningful conversations sparked by my work regarding social issues, and gained an insight into the substantial influence of media on the mass’s viewpoints.

As an internationally driven and highly academic establishment, an analytical approach and a collaborative attitude are essential qualities for students of UCL. Having been a social media manager and a graphic designer for NGO Recruitment’s page with over 95.000 followers, I pride myself on my ability to cooperate efficiently with various departments, yet still be able to take the initiative where needed. Alongside that, experiences in Mock Trial and Science Research electives enable me to conduct research independently, thus how I learned to form critical arguments and regard different perspectives.

These experiences have shaped me to become inquisitive, self-sufficient, and fueled my great ambition to further pursue studying Media. The UPC course would make the most ideal next step in establishing a strong educational foundation for me. I would relish the opportunity to analyze the European culture and environment, as an academic understanding of how society functions is crucial to creating impactful media. I look forward to meeting like-minded students and refining my knowledge in the search for my place in the ever-dynamic media industry.
