My Definition of a Writer (Reflective Essay Example)
Writer, by definition, is someone who writes a particular text. By the books, a writer could be anyone who has written or is currently writing whether it be a long novel or a short note to leave on the fridge so they won’t forget. However, when I hear the word writer my mind would automatically think about someone who has written a book of any sorts, published or not. A person doesn’t always have to carry the title of being a writer, in fact, a writer can refer to a particular point in someone's life. This could include anyone from a kid who has to write a book in their level for class to someone who has published works and is a bestselling author.
My definition of a writer comes from an assortment of memories I have leading up to this day. I remember being in third grade, writing my own story and having to present it to the class. I may have struggled with writing structure, but I would have considered myself and everyone else in that class a writer. We continue to be writers through our high school years and most of us will continue to be writers through college and even in our careers. The majority of the world's population will be a writer, by my definition, at some point in their lives.
Not all writers are just that, some can be defined by a less broad spectrum, they would be defined as authors. While I still believe that authors are writers, authors have dedicated their lives to writing in some approach. Writers who have upgraded their title to author will have any type of published writing. Most of these would make profit for the author. I come to this conclusion through reading a number of novels throughout my life and differentiating the two by those specific points of information. While containing differences between the two, an author is still a writer as much as a writer can be an author.
As I continue to improve my writing during my college career, my current definition of writer may change. However, with my current definition of writer, my college writing may be impacted in numerous positive ways. With the idea that a writer can be an author, I will strive to make any of my projects as well made as a published author. This will ensure that I am always willing to learn and improve how I write and everything that goes into my writing. During highschool, I have been able to grasp new knowledge on writing and develop as a writer. My definition of writer will further impact my willingness to continue to be a writer through my life, and with that comes enhancing my writing style, structure, and content within my writing.
While I intend to advance within my writing style, my current idea of what a writer is may further impact my writing without myself realizing. Especially in the beginning of furthering my education, I may see myself referring to common structures used in highschool that I may not necessarily need anymore. A noticeable change in my writing from my senior year from my previous years in highschool. We have gone from requiring a certain structure of our paragraphs within essays to focusing on different items such as limited word essays, research, as well as practicing APA structure. Several of my classmates have previously asked during various projects whether or not we need to use the MLA structure which we used for the majority of our life in writing. This is a small example out of the countless ways in which we may attempt to revert back to old writing habits without realizing because they have been required of us our entire lives.
Overall, my intention in my upcoming college and professional writing future is to continue and improve without forming and reverting back to old habits that I will not need. Furthermore, I will develop my definition of writer to what fits best throughout my life and point of view. I have an enormous respect for writers who strive to improve themselves and hope to continue to be like them and accept criticism as well as improve my own writing. Not only do I continue to write within school I write outside of class and enjoy it, which is why I hope to be able to progress within my writing ability.
