Gym classes are the most favoured subject within a school day. It gives students time to enjoy but it can also help our bodies in various ways. It can help with not only our physical well-being but also our mental well- being too. But the 40 minutes given to us is extremely low. We should increase gym time for students so they can unlock their athletic potential.

Gym can keep our body and mind active. Playing games in gym class may look useless but it gives us great exercise. Running is a great way of exercise and many sports (e.g. Soccer, Basketball) are mainly focused on that. Gym can also improve our endurance. In sports like football, endurance is very important as you will be running back and forth on the field. On top of that, gym classes can improve our cognitive ability. This skill is very important as a lot of times you will have split-second decisions, and applying this ability at an early age will help later on in your life. Increasing gym class times can be the first step into a healthier lifestyle.

Believe it or not, gym can help your mental health in a lot of ways. It is considered a stress reliever! In a gym, your mind forgets about other work/assignments that you may be stressing about. It’s a break for your mind. Gym also has a big impact on depression and is a very safe and effective way of coping with it. According to the Mayo Clinic, when exercising our brain releases endorphins that distract you from any negativity you could be feeling. Over time, you will feel better without any side effects, than if you used medications such as antidepressants. In addition to this, gym can help change your mood. During gym, our brain releases another chemical called dopamine, which makes you feel more enthusiastic throughout day-to-day activities. Over the past few years, kids have experienced a lot. By giving more gym time, we can do a favour to millions.

Finally, I think it’s safe to say that with the current time given, we could accomplish more if there was more time. Unlike other subjects, time in gym class moves very fast. One second we are walking towards the gymnasium and the next we are walking back to class. People might say it’s because we are having fun, but I believe it’s because we spend lots of time preparing for games rather than playing them. Out of the 40 minutes given, we spend at least 10-15 minutes getting ready to play. That means only 25 minutes is spent doing the activity. You can’t even finish a proper game in that time frame. Imagine this, you are enjoying a game of volleyball, but just when it is about to get good, you have to return to your other classes. Adding more gym time can result in having more fun.

As you can see now, increasing our gym time is a great idea! It not only allows us to become more physically and mentally active, but it also gives us time to relax and get our minds off the rush in our day-to-day lives. So now that you understand how gym classes can help us, don’t you think that the 40-minute period is just not enough. Fortunately, we can change that by increasing the time for gym classes.
