Persuasive Essay Example on Homework is Not Beneficial
Many schools around the world require students to complete projects, book reports, or dioramas outside of school. This is what’s known as homework. While parents and teachers think that homework is beneficial, 59% of high school students in California thought they had too much homework. With multiple studies and from my own personal experiences there are numerous reasons to prove why homework is not beneficial.
People will claim that homework is beneficial for students, therefore they will state that students who spend 31-90 minutes on homework each day will perform better (source 1: Homework Beneficial? Pro 1 ). When in fact more time spent on doing homework can consequently lead to students developing sleep deprivation, headaches, stomach problems, exhaustion and weight loss( sources 1: Con 1). I myself have even experienced weight gain due to the lack of exercise I get while doing homework. Not only is homework bad for a student's health but it will negatively impact their integrity as well.
With integrity being, the action of doing the right thing even when no one is watching. School homework does not try to increase the integrity of students, in fact homework lowers students integrity because in source 1, con 1 it states “90% of middle school students and 67% of high school students admit to copying someone else’s homework”(source 1 con 1). To add on, students are not the only people cheating, with even 43% of parents admitting that they do child assignments for them ( source 1 con 1). Students have so little integrity that from personal experience students will even change the lettering in writing work or even purposefully put in wrong answers so as to not make it seem so noticeable that they copied.
Furthermore homework may also cause difficulty for some students to gain access to or complete. With 96.5% of students stating they use the internet for class assignments and with 41 % of students living in low income families, they are less likely to have the resources needed to complete assignments such as computers, internet or a quiet space to work ( source 1 con 2). This could be difficult for students because most of their work is online and even works such as projects or dioramas that aren’t online still require some students to have the internet to access information or instructions. Even with some schools allowing students to borrow computers or some form of internet such as hotspots can also cause problems with the internet being down or with siblings using the internet at the same time can cause it to be low. Not only can siblings that go to school be a problem but even siblings who don't go to school can make it challenging. Younger siblings can be problematic, they make loud noises that can make it quite difficult to concentrate and with some families being low income many times parents depend upon students to look after their siblings or do housework without allowing much time for students to complete work.
Finailly, with personal experience I have found that living in a low income household can not only cause it to be difficult to access or complete work but may also be painful when asking for help.
