Application Essay Example: Exercise Physiology

As an area of study in health sciences, a degree in Exercise Physiology would provide many opportunities for occupations and continuing education. Although Exercise Physiology tends to pair with athletic training, I plan to pursue a PharmD degree after obtaining my bachelor’s degree. I have a passion for working with people, and specifically improving the daily lives of people. The courses I have taken so far at Gustavus have further proved that I want to pursue a degree that is geared towards helping others, the Exercise Physiology Degree. 

The Exercise Physiology major prepares students to serve many different types of people with varying needs, which is vital to me because regardless of the specific occupation I end up in, I know want to work in an of geriatric healthcare. I have gone between pursuing Geriatric Physical Therapy and Pharmacy specializing in Geriatrics because I want to help the older population. Many Exercise Physiology majors that I have met, aim to be an athletic trainer, or work with sports in some way, however, my passion lies in assisting elderly. I stayed with my grandparents for many years as a child and grew up helping them as much as I could. Seeing my grandparents and parents age significantly in the last few years only increases the value I have for obtaining an education that allows me to help others improve their physical quality of life. 

The broadness of this major would help me not only understand many different types of people, but also understand how people are impacted physically throughout their life. Additionally, this degree would allow for an array of future education opportunities. For example, I first picked this major because I wanted to work geriatric Physical Therapy, however, the Pre-Health Professionals course I am in inspired a change to Pharmacy in my plan for continuing education. This major offers the opportunity for me to fine tune my future career in health services, without having to back track by changing a major. 

In the future, an Exercise Physiology Degree provides an opportunity for me to work while continuing my education because of the vast positions offered part-time and full-time in the health and exercise science field. My future probable career in Pharmacy studies the effects medication can have on patients internally and externally. The Exercise Physiology major is vital to my future because it teaches students to understand the human body as a whole and how it functions, and prepares students for graduate school, while awarding students with experience that would qualify them for a worthy job while continuing their education.
