Human beings often overlook the small details in their everyday lives that contribute to their overall happiness. A smile is just one of those details that seem futile, but play a vital role in society, relationships, and simply being human. Despite how significant a smile is, I’ve only recently been able to enjoy laughing out loud, all thanks to my braces. I didn’t have to put on a facade anymore. No one should have to fear returning a warm smile without having to feel ashamed or embarrassed of their smile; with this said, I see myself training to become an Orthodontist in the next three years.

“Say cheese!” was a phrase that I feared in my early childhood, because the need to look presentable at birthday parties and in family photos was never absent. Now that I reflect back, I realize that no child should be subject to such levels of stress on the basis of appearance or acceptance. With various studies proving that childrens’ self-images are influenced by the near-impossible beauty standards of the modern world, it’s no wonder why many develop low self-confidence in themselves. With how familiar these scenarios sound, I consider the youth of today, as well as my young-self, as my inspirations that drive my dream.

My dream in becoming an Orthodontist will positively impact others by providing individuals with affordable care. After taking into consideration the hefty price tag attached to getting braces, I understand that a myriad of individuals are prevented from repairing their smiles primarily due to cost. Getting braces was a financial hurdle for my family as well, which was why my treatment was delayed until my Freshman year of high school. Knowing that many individuals won’t be able to see themselves with a healthier smile mainly because of cost is simply not fair. My determination to make dental services like braces more affordable to patients will positively impact them by providing them with a healthier bite, and a better image of themselves.

I hope to learn more about Dentistry over the course of this school year, and possibly be able to shadow a professional in order to get closer to achieving my dream. After immense research, I understand how significant in-person experiences are for specialties like Dentistry. Working one-on-one with a mentor and patients will greatly help me tackle the obstacles that come with this vocation. Whether it’s asking my Orthodontist and highly acclaimed professionals in Dentistry about their line of work, or seeing more individuals’ lives be transformed with Dental services, I will strive to expand my knowledge.

Providing care to individuals who are afraid to express themselves, face financial burdens, or are in pain is a form of service that resonates with me. Despite how insignificant a smile may seem, it holds the potential to change the course of an individual’s entire day, and everyone should have the ability to express themselves without shame.
