We all know homework as extra work we have to do at homework and is due the next day. Homework has dated back to the earliest times and we all want to know, does is it help you? Is it worth it?  Some people say that homework is a waste of time but students should have homework because it teaches students time management and other life skills, it reduces students' screen time, and it allows students to have higher academic success.

Students should have homework because it teaches students time management and other life skills. In the article “The Pros and Cons of Homework” states, “Homework is much more than just completing the assigned tasks. Homework can develop time management skills, forcing students to plan their time and make sure that all of their homework assignments are done on time. By learning to manage their time, students also practice their problem-solving skills and independent thinking”(UniversityOfThePeople). This shows that homework is more than just work it teaches students life skills that they need in the real world like problem-solving skills and time management. In the article “Why Is Homework Important?” states, “Homework goes beyond just the task itself; it helps children take control of their workload and increase their time management skills. Homework is set with a deadline and taking ownership of this deadline helps them think independently and develop problem-solving skills. This is a prime example of why homework is important because time management is a vital life skill that helps children throughout higher education and their careers”(Anglia). This shows that time management is a very important skill that students need in their everyday life that they get to learn from homework since they have a certain due date for the task. Therefore students should have homework because it teaches students time management and life skills that they use in their everyday life so it will help them in their lives because they will already do those skills like time management that people use all the time in jobs and school.

Students should have homework because it reduces students’ screen time. In the article “20 Pros and Cons of Homework” states, “On the average school night, a student in the US might get 3-4 hours of screen time in per day. When that student isn’t in school, that figure doubles to 7-8 hours of screen time. Homework might be unwanted and disliked, but it does encourage better study habits. It discourages time being spent in front of the television or playing games on a mobile device”(Gaille). This shows that on average students get 3-8 hours of screen time a day which is way too much but homework helps reduce screen time. In the article “The Pros and Cons of Homework” states, “Many students in North America spend far too many hours watching TV. If they weren’t in school, these numbers would likely increase even more. Although homework is usually undesired, it encourages better study habits and discourages spending time in front of the TV”(UniversityOfThePeople). This shows that students spend too much time on screens and homework reduces the time on screens and increases better study habits. Therefore students should have homework because it reduces students' screen time. Students have way too much screen time and too much screen time can cause bad eyesight which isn’t good to start as a student but homework helps reduce screen time.

Students should have homework because it allows students to have higher academic success. In the article “Duke Study: Homework Helps Students Succeed in School as Long as There Isn’t Too Much” states, “Duke University researchers have reviewed more than 60 research studies on homework between 1987 and 2003 and concluded that homework does have a positive effect on student achievement”(DukeToday). This shows that over 60 different research studies show that homework helps students' academic achievement. In the article “Homework and Academic Achievement: A Meta-Analytic Research” states, “A majority of studies on homework’s impact – 64% in one meta-study and 72% in another – showed that take-home assignments were effective at improving academic achievement”(Bas). This shows that over 50% of students that do homework improve in their academic achievement. Therefore students should have homework because it improves students academic success, which shows that homework helps and it's not just a waste of time because it improves your success or grades in school.

Some critics say students should not have homework because it causes too much stress. However, students should have homework because it gets parents involved. In the article, “The Pros and Cons of Homework” states, “Homework can be something that gets parents involved in their children’s lives if the environment is a healthy one. A parent helping their child with homework makes them take part in their academic success, and allows for the parent to keep up with what the child is doing in school”(UniversityOfThePeople). This shows that getting parents involved lets them know how their students are doing in school or if they are struggling with a certain topic. Therefore students should have homework because it gets parents involved which lets them help with their work and lets them know how they are doing so if they are struggling or if they are understanding the topic.

Now people know that homework is helpful and it’s worth it. We know why it was created in the earliest of times. It was one of the only things made in the early times that stayed the same and didn’t change. So students should have homework because it teaches students time management and other life skills, it reduces students' screen time, and it allows students to have higher academic success.
