Essay Sample: Why Puppy Mills Should Be Illegal

In this paper I will be talking about why puppy mills should be shut down. Why puppy mills are so bad, how many puppies die from puppy mills, puppy mills kill dogs, and many more reasons why puppy mills should be shut down.

The first reason is why they should be shut down. They should be shut down because they cause mental harm to the dogs. The puppies are taken away from their mothers too soon (usually right when they turn 4 weeks).

The next thing is why they are so bad. They are bad because the dogs are usually shoved in dirty, overcrowded, stacked wire cages, and are refused healthy food, clean water, and basic veterinary care which is really sad. These conditions, poor genetics, early weaning and stress can cause the puppies to develop serious behavioral and health problems that are pricey and hard to treat.

The really sad thing is how many puppies die from puppy mills. Every year in America, it is estimated around 2.11 million puppies are sold that are from puppy mills, while 3 million are killed because shelters are full and there aren’t enough adoptive homes.

Another reason is they kill their dogs. Sadly death is common in puppy mills. Many sick and untreated dogs die in their cages. If a dog is no longer profitable, puppy mill owners kill them. They do it themselves and on their own property by starving, drowning, shooting, beating or even burying the dogs alive.

You might be wondering how puppy mills started, well puppy mills came into popularity after World War II in reaction to crop failures in the Midwest. What may be hard to believe today is that the USDA actually promoted puppy mills by advertising that it was a lucrative and fail-proof business.

That is why Puppy mills should be shut down. It is really sad that not very many people bother or even care to help get rid of puppy mills.
