The idea of emotion and music go hand in hand. Some people find a connection to music, whether it’s to feel happy, sad, angry, or any other mood. The thought of taking in several applicants to test this theory is truly intriguing. Many have tried it, but what about an 8th grade student? I will be able to take in 5 different types of people to see their reaction towards genres of music. They will be put in a quiet room, and the conductor of the experiment will try to make it as comfortable for the applicants as possible. There will be a survey for them to take so there will be privacy. It will ask a number of questions of how the songs made them feel, what they thought of, or if it had any impact on them. They will need to be as detailed as possible so the theory can be proven. Such in the article, The psychological functions of music listening (May 24th, 2013), “Notice that in carrying out such a survey, we are assuming that participants have relatively accurate introspective access to their own motivations in pursuing particular musical behaviors, and that they are able to accurately recall the appropriate experiences.” This corresponds with the idea of my experiment.  There have been several troubles in my life, and music has always been an outlet. I understand certain parts of someone’s brain can trigger certain types of hormones or ticks. In this project people should know and understand that the types of music they listen to can affect their well being. The main question in this research is ; how can the brain react to certain types of music, and how will it affect your mood?

This research plan could help decipher certain mental illnesses or types of thinking. It could be known as helping more people out ,and making them seek remorse or happiness. Therapists could find a certain technique including the one used for the experiment. They can ask their patients if music has influenced their mood based on what they listen to. There can be a common twist of happy songs making people be emotional. They want to feel and have what the artists sing about. In conclusion of this topic, it could help mental professionals be more organized in their work. As a troubled teenager, many of us find comfort in music. Even though the comfort may seem healthy, it could be very toxic in a certain state of mind. Mental health matters in the younger generations. This experiment can lead a whole group of people in the right direction.

For instance, in the article, Music-Evoked Emotions—Current Studies (November 24th, 2017) states, “A famous historical example for a positive impact of music on mental disorders is the Spanish King Philipp V who—due to his severe depressions—stopped signing official documents and got up from his bed only briefly and only by night. In 1737, his wife Elisabeth Farneseappointed the famous Italian castrato singer Carlo Broschi Farinelli to Madrid. Over 10 years, Farinelli performed every night (in total 3,600 times) four arias in order to banish the black melancholia from the king's mind until the king himself “…die Musik lernet…” With his singing, Farinelli succeeded in agitating the king to partial fulfillment of his governmental duties and an occasional appearance in the governmental council. The king's favorite aria was Quell' usignolo with a difficult coloratura part.” The history of music has lived with everyone and everything for so long. From the research notes, The psychological functions of music listening (May 24th, 2013) also stated that one of the participants had said,  “I have anxiety issues so I find it quite a nice way to settle myself.” Some people can understand their surroundings and their thought process. Others can struggle with those and it could cause them problems. In modern times music can contribute a lot, like it has mentioned in the research paper, The Effects of Different Types of Music on Mood, Tension, and Mental Clarity (January 4th, 1998). The text states, “Music has been used to facilitate anesthesia during pregnancy and labor, reduce stress and discomfort associated with surgical and dental procedures.” The power music holds to make someone more comfortable in a situational is astronomical.  Just imagine what it could do in the future. Who knows, the next brilliant scientist could have been inspired by a musical legend. There could be so many things that contribute to the factor of today’s society. Music and the brain happen to be one of those factors. There could be a teaching into which music is important and that it can interfere with someone’s everyday life. It could also make an amazing difference in it too.

In the article, Music Use for Mood Regulation: Self-Awareness and Conscious Listening Choices in Young People With Tendencies to Depression (May 24th, 2019) has expressed how young people have found music to influence their depression. From the article it states, “Similarly, in a study on listening to nostalgic music, Garrido (2018) found that implicit mood measures (in which participants are unaware that their mood is being assessed) indicated a much higher level of negative mood responses after listening to nostalgic music than participants reported in response to direct questioning.” This proves the point of music being effective toward mood and shows that the type of music you listen to can disturb you. The theory has been proven, but the one I’m working on is to make it more personal and in depth. It’s to prove that these people use music to their advantage and how it can seriously affect their daily lives. The world needs to know even if there’s so much evidence to support it. Also in the article, How Does Music Affect Your Mood? | Music and Emotion Relationship (August 8th, 2019) had mentioned, “It was discovered that music can release dopamine in two main places in the brain, the dorsal and ventral striatum. When you are having a pleasurable experience, such as listening to your favorite song, these areas of the brain light up.” As I had said before, the brain and music are connected. This backs up the theory. It shows how hormones that are released from the brain can make you a certain way when you listen to music.

Emotion and mood correspond with music. They are  placed together in identifying different feelings toward the human brain. It’s interesting to take action into this experiment because it shows how humans work. Thank you for listening to the aspects of my product, we shall work together in the future.
