Persuasive Essay Example: Why Should Cooking Classes Be Saved?

Electives are the classes that our schools choose to teach us during the day to introduce us to different things that we might like or that could help us in our future jobs. But recently they’ve had to cut down on some of the classes, because of many reasons such as inflation and prices going up. So which elective should we keep? We should keep the cooking elective because it helps students with, not only cooking, but also enhances their four core class skills and social skills.

Cooking classes don’t only teach students to cook but also to improve academic skills. Students can not only learn how to cook but also how to improve core skills they already learn in school. This information is according to Paragraph 5 of Reading, Writing, and Roasting: Schools Bring Cooking Back into the Classroom, “Cooking With Kids teachers try to use the cooking class to do geography lessons, too — like asking kids to find Ethiopia on the map. They also could build in math: for example, graphing favorite foods based on classroom surveys or doubling recipes and converting grams to ounces.” (Allison Aubrey) 

Students in cooking classes reported stronger social interactions with classmates. Students get to improve collaboration and social skills while also learning how to cook food. The statement that proves it is Paragraph 6 of Reading, Writing, and Roasting: Schools Bring Cooking Back into the Classroom, “The collective pride in working together to prepare a meal was really valuable," says Cunningham-Sabo.” (Allison Aubrey)

While many people say that we shouldn’t keep cooking here’s why I think otherwise, because it teaches kids not only how to cook but also other life skills that could help them get a job in the future. This elective does cost a lot of money to begin with, but it will pay back during the many years students can use the kitchen and its utensils. From my personal experience, many students such as me, are hungry during the day and can’t focus on their work because of that, so combining a class that could feed them during the day and that gives students better grades would be the best choice for schools.

Lastly, I think that this will improve students academically and physically because students get nutrients and better grades when they take the cooking elective. So if you’re still questioning whether we should save the cooking elective or not, take into consideration the impact that the cooking elective has on our students and school district.
