According to English Romantic poet William Wordsworth, “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.” The use of the quote reveals to us that poetry uses deep inclination in order to cast a story full of emotion. If an author can not search within themself when writing poetry, the story might as well not be written. The Romanticism period ties in because it emphasized high emotions. In The Others, the filmmaker incorporated elements of Romanticism by the use of mystery, intense emotion, and gothic components.

Mystery contributes to the story to a large degree. For instance, the previous nannies had vanished out of nowhere leaving the family by themselves. The event of someone disappearing let alone numerous people at a time is unsettling. In addition, the mother exclaims to one of the maids that Lydia’s (or so she thinks) footsteps are far too loud and making her migraine worse. However, she hears it again but notices none of the maids are in the house when it happens and is certain her children would never give off such a sound. Furthermore, she elucidates to anyone residing in the house that the piano is not to be touched. Within the night, music is constantly played from the piano and the pianist is unknown. The efforts convey the use of unusual events in order to create suspense within the story.

Meanwhile, the director uses strong emotion in the story. An occurrence of this action is at the beginning of the story when the mother first wakes up she is screaming. Her dream must have been filled with a great number of inferior feelings. Along with this, her son is often terrified to be alone and avoids it at any cost. If someone does not feel comfortable in their own home, there ought to be something wrong. Moreover, the intensity of the mother’s feelings when she saw the people sitting at the table talking and deciding to rip up their papers and shake the table showed the emotional stress she had been holding in.

Ultimately, the story conveys the use of gothic elements by the appearance of the setting. The house is dark and contains ancient historic pieces. When we think of haunted houses, we think of something similar to the appearance of the house. The trees surrounding the house are dead which can be compared to the death of the characters and how the people could not escape their problems. The ghosts in which they find out they are contribute to the use of gothic elements as well because they convey supernatural events.

Overall, the use of Romanticism in the story allows it to be suspenseful and grab the viewer’s attention. Some people like to view stories like this because it allows us to develop ideas in which if we were put into that position. We are able to learn about our surroundings from a darker perspective. In addition, people are able to sympathize with those affected but at the same time enjoy the thriller. The director decided to use such techniques in order to draw your attention to the chilling movie.
