Is working overtime bad for you? Sure, it can lead to more financial wealth, but it can also lead to stress, health problems, increased blood pressure, etc. and this also leads to more alcohol drinking on work and deaths, so, working overtime is bad for you?

Side Effects

According to the World Health Organization, there was a study done on working overtime that showed people tend to drink more alcohol and think more slowly while working overtime which leads to more work deaths in the workplace. Overtime can also lead to stress in adults and make them more prone to depression than adults who work normal hours. Working overtime can stop events or parties or talking with loved ones which can cause this depression in adults and also depression can lead to the consumption of alcohol to keep the sadness away and distract it. It can also cause slow thinking because of the work hours and can make a person more clumsy or more likely to pass out due to exhaustion.  According to the national Library of Medicine, a study showed that 745,000 people approximately die from working overtime from heat stroke or a heart attack which is more than the deaths from sharks and bears combined. “Too many people are working overtime with no pay trying to make a person that hasn’t even hired them happy. Don’t invest all your time into someone that isn’t claiming you” - Sonya Parker. She was an author and was an inspirational writer who told about her experience on working overtime. “Obviously, the overtime is welcome on the paycheck, but people have to weigh the importance of being and spending time with family against the draw of making more money” - Kevin Martin. He was a professional basketball player who talked about working overtime and the experiences of it and was an inspiration to others.

Work Hours

According to National Library of Medicine. Adults can also be more prone to health problems and fatigue while working overtime which leads to deaths in the workplace because of the fatigue it causes. The most common deaths are from heat stroke or heart attack, the mandates in Wisconsin show that 45 hours or more of working overtime is unusual while working overtime is 30 - 40 hours. That is almost 2 days a week and if you were on overtime for a month that will total up to almost 8 days. Sometimes it can even total up to 10 days if you work that long.

Unusual Work Hours

According to the department of workforce development. In other countries of the world working 50 hours is unusual and other countries working overtime is 40 - 45 hours. For 40 hours a week you get paid When working overtime it puts you at a higher risk for stress. Working overtime increases suicide rates for adults because working overtime in some cases can cause depression and that can lead to higher suicide rates in the workplace and impact the company.

Counterargument

But, the counterargument to my claim is also that working overtime can lead to more financial wealth, and would also lead to more promotions for your job. Also for a bad effect of working overtime you can also get slow-thinking which can add to the total deaths of overtime. But, it can also lead to more productivity for the company. 50 hours of work is no longer considered unusual for other countries and it totals up to almost 2 days of total work a week.

Conclusion

Why are the work hours so long? When do they become stable? When can we not have these side effects again? These don’t have a certain answer, but because of the countries and their work laws they are meeting their downfall to meet work hours and need to make a change now for work hours to be safe for everyone. They need to change this so working overtime is bad for you.
