Many people all around the world use them daily, whether that be a simple call to a friend or coworker, or maybe just playing a simple online game! What is it we’re speaking of? Cell phones. Cell phones play a major role in our day to day life for potentially good and bad reasons. Phones are used for many different reasons by many people. For instance, photographers can use them to take pictures of their work and any other employees in other places that need internet connection can as well. Mothers or family members can take photos or videos for memories, make plans, draw, the list goes on. Mobile devices play a major role in our daily life, although sometimes these said phones could possibly cause negative effects on people, they also might just be able to have positive effects on individuals and improve their lives instead.

Starting off, cell phone usage may lead to improvement and happiness in one's life. It could be said that mobile devices can help us connect and communicate better than ever due to things like social media, text messaging and calls. Social media is used mainly to communicate with others, (hint the word ‘social’); with it, you’re able to talk to others all the way on the other side of the world or just someone across the street with a few simple taps onto the phone! Talking to people, especially friends has been scientifically proven that it can raise your dopamine and serotonin levels which overall can make you feel much better, happier and creates improvements on your life. These phones have many activities you can do with them, in the case of boredom, a cell phone may be able to cure it. On the devices you can download games to play, read books, watch movies or TV shows, draw, listen to music, and so much more. An individual may be sitting on a bus waiting patiently for the arrival of their destination or could be sitting on their couch doing nothing, sometimes this can become boring. So pulling out your phone and playing a game or anything can help cure boredom and make time go by quicker which in result would make the individual happier. Both social media’s ability to get people to communicate and phones curing boredom indicates the improvements these devices could make on people.

Continuing on with this, mobile devices could potentially lead to success and happiness. Students struggling in classes may have the ability to get extra help online and figure out how to do their work. Some people don’t understand what the teacher is teaching them at times and could very well become confused with the work and possibly even fail the class but, sometimes they can sign up for tutoring, look up methods and even text or call a friend for help! With the student being assisted from any of those ideals listed above, they could maybe pass the class, help others around them who are struggling with it, or even possibly become happier and relieved which in result is a good thing. Since the phone's ability to take and hold pictures and videos, people are able to possibly store memories better than before. By storing memories people can look back on them afterwards and remember the moments, laugh, show joy, and share them with others! Phones' ability to help students in school and storing things for memories goes to say that devices can bring great things to us.

On the contrary, cell phones might just be harming people and potentially worsen our lives. Mobile devices are able to desensitize people, especially our youth. Electronics have gained much popularity, and with that of course children have got a hold of them giving them internet access. The internet has pretty much anything you can think of, from innocent things like pets, to vile inappropriate artifacts that can traumatize others. If people become desensitized, their basic human emotions and feelings may go away leading to people seeing them possibly as “weird, odd, etc” and following that they may become bullied or isolated which isn’t really an improvement. This being said, phones can give people poor self/body images and dysmorphia. Social media, a place where people can post themselves, family, friends, art, hobbies, the list goes on; having social media can definitely have some positives but, let's say someone posts a very unrealistic image of themselves, maybe by editing the image. This of course, catches the eyes of many, and sometimes people will look at that unrealistic human body and reflect back onto their own, maybe becoming upset, jealous, or depressed all because their body doesn’t look “appealing” like the photoshopped one does, this leads to many with depression and eating disorders which in no way at all is an improvement. These reasonings, desensitization on our youth from the internet and poor self-image due to social media demonstrates that cell phones aren’t always something good.

Next, there are some instances that may possibly show that phones are unable to improve our lives. Due to advancements on devices, they allow you to perform many tasks like playing games, texting, editing, watching videos and more, but sometimes they can get in the way of our lives causing a distraction, For this instance hypothetically speaking, a student could be in class while suddenly their phone vibrates, the student opens their phone whilst the teacher is of course, still teaching, the student continues to play on the device and misses out on important subjects the teacher could’ve been talking about. When a student or anyone does something like this they could be missing out on classwork, business work, or just life itself! It could be said that the devices we use can put us out of touch with people by distracting us, which more or less is not an improvement. Similar to this, cell phones also could potentially link to laziness. On a data chart from Statista, it is said that an average estimate of how much people use their phones daily is roughly about 5-6 hours, while it is possible for people to use their devices normally, some people may start to grow attached to them or become addicted. If they just sit around and do nothing but mindlessly scroll through the phone then some would say that the individual is lazy. People who sit around and just stare at their screen are possibly missing out on the factors of life and may lose human touch, which goes to say that laziness can come out of too much phone usage.

All in all, cell phones are an immense factor in our life whether we like it or not. There will always be both good and bad effects from things, that's just the way life is. Cell phones majorly help us with so many things and help us become better at communicating. Devices will always be here with us. These phones can improve our lives or, the opposite!
