Friendship is an aspect of life that everyone values. Everyone has different expectations of what they want in a friendship. Although there are various aspects to a true friendship, my definition of friendship represents an unconditional, platonic relationship where a person cares about someone and loves them for who they are, not for who they want them to be. I love being with my friends because I’m able to be myself. That is one of the most important aspects of a genuine friendship. No one should have to hide who they are to have a friend. Being yourself is the best way to show respect and honesty.

Honesty is one of the most important qualities a person has; it’s what strengthens all relationships. Being honest in a friendship means that someone is willing to tell the other person anything. It’s equally important for that person to receive and accept different ideas, even though they may not agree with all of them. In every friendship, opinions should be respected, never disregarded. This idea is also related to communication. Communication is another huge part of relationships and is needed to keep a relationship going. Friends should never be afraid to tell each other how they feel or be ashamed to voice their opinions.

One of my best friends, Kaleigh, is a great example of this. Our friend group of four wanted to go to one of the Vanden football games. We had been talking about it for a while since Vanden was playing against Armijo, a school that another one of my friends goes to. That was the game right after the homecoming carnival. As the day approached, we needed to come up with a plan so we could let our parents know what time to drop us off. While we discussed our plan, Kaleigh said she didn’t feel comfortable going because of how crowded it might be. After hearing Kaleigh’s concerns, we all decided not to go. It was admirable for her to feel comfortable speaking up and telling us how she felt. I’m glad she did because if she hadn’t let us know how she felt, she might’ve felt uncomfortable being at the game and we wouldn’t have known why.

Respecting different opinions is also a significant quality of friendship. Being a part of a friendship means that there is no judgment. We can share their vulnerabilities, knowing we won’t be judged or misunderstood. It’s okay to think differently, but it’s important to respect each other despite those differences. Enjoying different interests is great for friendships. It gives people the ability to broaden their horizons and learn more about one another’s passions. It also enables them to try new activities, especially when having friends that are of different ethnicity and race, giving countless opportunities to discover more about their culture and their traditions, especially the food.

One day Kaleigh and I had this debate about which color best correlated with the subject of math. She said math was blue, and I said math was red. We went back and forth for a while, but we still respected each other’s opinions. Even now we still don’t agree. The conversation ended by agreeing we think differently about the situation. This wasn’t a serious topic, but we still expressed what we believed was the best color to accommodate the subject. This is a prime example of respect because we may not agree, but we are still capable of being great friends.

Being there for each other is another leading factor in friendship. When friends are struggling, they should try their best to support them in any way they can. People should be able to count on one another to be there for them at any time. Friendship is all about encouraging one another, being supported, and feeling safe. When I’m with my friends, I feel less lonely and more appreciated. Certain situations can reveal true friendships. I’m glad to have several devoted friends that I can depend on at any time.

Whenever I experience rough times, Kaleigh is there for me. She lets me know that she’ll be there for me if I ever need reassurance. I also do the same for her. I am there for her whenever she needs someone to talk to. Another key factor of friendship is reciprocation. When my friends do something for me, I want to show how grateful I am for their generosity. Friendships should never be one-sided; that also goes with any relationship. I appreciate that I’m able to count on my friends and be certain that we will never hesitate to encourage each other.

Having fun is one of my favorite parts of being with my friends. Friends should be able to laugh and make a plethora of memories. We have pictures of us together, beginning from preschool to the present day. I love that my friends and I can have a good time together. They never fail to make me laugh or help me feel better. I can go to them if and when I need anything. We can joke around and make each other’s days more enjoyable.

True friendship is powerful and can last a lifetime. Friends are proud of each other’s accomplishments and are never envious. We encourage one another and lift each other up, especially when we’re feeling down. We are open to each other’s ideas and value each other’s interests. As we grow, we learn more about one another and love each other for that. We may only have a few true friends in our lifetime, but those friendships will be the best friendships we could ever ask for.
