Why I Want to Become a Nurse Essay Example

My awareness I wanted to become a nurse occurred when my grandmother who was a Licensed Vocational Nurse died from cancer when I was 13 years old. She told me about her experience of being a nurse. She explained the medications she dispensed, and which daily activities of life patients needed assistance performing, and how she loved working in the hospital. She lit-up whenever she spoke about her time as an LVN. I believe it was her passion for nursing that made me desire to become a nurse.

Shortly after my grandmother’s death, my parents explained to me that I was not smart enough to become a nurse. They continued by saying that nurses are extremely smart, amazingly outgoing, and speak eloquently. I was told that “if” I graduated high school I should feel proud and not strive for more. I am a stubborn person; I tried to comply with my parent’s wishes; nonetheless, I could never give up my desire to become a nurse. Eventually, I met the one person who would spur me on to continue my dream. In the process I learned to believe in myself, accepting that perfection is impossible, and understanding that any fear can be overcome with the right motivation. During my quest I became a Certified Nursing Assistant 1 and 2; I worked in long-term care and I loved it. Then I moved on to become a Phlebotomist, which may seem like a strange move but, for me, it was a necessary step. As a Phlebotomist, I volunteered my skills, to a clinic where I believe I made a difference in the patients’ lives. Consequently, I have stumbled on my journey and learned from my success and my mistakes. Though it has taken several years, I have worked toward my goal of becoming a nurse. My experiences have allowed me to appreciate the lives and struggles of others while motivating me. I have heard it is not the destination that is important but the journey. Therefore, my journey has led me here and I am ready to fulfill my dream to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
