According to  Caroline Crosson Gilpin “Anxiety, followed closely by depression, has become a growing diagnosis among college students in the last few years”(Gilpin 1). This issue is, how emotional support animals are not allowed on school campuses. With the rise in mental illnesses, colleges are seeing more requests for ESA’s. Therefore, emotional support animals should be allowed on school campuses.

There are various reasons why emotional support animals should be allowed on college campuses. First of all, with the amount of stress students have from assignments, tests, and projects their mental health goes wild! Emotional support animals help their owners when they are stressed. Miller states “Their presence, their unconditional love, their warmth and softness to pet and hold are all thought to be calming and mood-boosting,” she says. “The need to care for them provides structure, purpose, and being needed”(Miller 1). This quote shows that with the company of an animal ,they can reduce fear in frightening situations. So, when stressed hugging, petting, or just touching an animal can instantly soothe you when you are feeling stressed or anxious. Another example as to why ESA’s should be allowed on college campuses is stated by Orso “But Molly Crossman, a researcher at Yale who focuses on human-animal interaction, said that research has been limited to short-term interactions and there have been few studies that conclude if, how, or why ESAs work” (Orso 2). In addition to this, human-animal interaction is proven to be essential to the health and welfare of both animals and humans. For example, if someone suddenly startled an animal and the animal jumped or tried to bite, it would be best to be calm. Having human-animal interaction is a skill needed by anyone. Furthermore, being comfortable around animals will help in different situations.

Although ESA’s have been shown to help their owners, many people think differently. Many people believe that emotional support animals should not be allowed on school campuses. They think this because, just like humans animals have to use the bathroom. In these situations, it creates chaos and disorder. For instance, “The airline cited incidents of animals peeing and pooping on flights and biting passengers or crew members”(Miller 1). Although this may be true and can happen with any animal this can be easily avoided. In order to avoid this, the animal can go right before the flight. And, if it happens it can be cleaned up in no time! Therefore, ESA’s are much more of an advantage rather than a disadvantage. ESA’s are there to boost your mood and lower your stress levels.

Overall, ESA’s are very beneficial. I believe that Emotional support animals should be allowed on school campuses. Animals offer love and softness. They are there to help you when you are in distress.  ESA’s have helped many people with mental health issues and will continue to make an impact on thousands of students.
