One of my favorite Bible verses is 1 Peter 4:10. It reads, “Each one of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” It is important to me to be mindful and purposeful with a range of aspects of my life. I, personally, love the core pillars that NHS stands for, and I would like to integrate and be even more mindful and interactive when dealing with scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

Undoubtfully, scholarship is a key part of academic integrity. It can be defined as “a student's dedication to academic achievements.” It is important in my performance at school to turn in my best work possible, and, in my experience, can only be achieved by diligently working and using maximum effort. Most students overlook the importance of grades because it can often be perceived there is no reward for the demanding, extra work it takes. On the contrary, I believe getting good grades can have good short terms such as awards and college scholarships, but I also believe that kind of hard work will translate to personal triumph over difficulties and trials we will all inevitably face.

Furthermore, the next pillar is leadership. I believe leadership is a core part of schools and our everyday lives because it can help to guide or influence the peers around us. I, personally, have grown up and still currently look up to past and current members of the NHS, and I would like to be a positive influence on students younger than me, peers my age, and older too. I think a good leader is defined as someone who maximizes and prioritizes the efforts of others toward the achievement of their personal goals and ultimately Era’s mission, which is “Equipping and Empowering Students for a Lifetime of Success.”

To build on that, a good character is necessary to have a good, trusting relationship with everyone around you. For example, if you cheat on a test, you will not be trusted in the future. However, if you have integrity and are reliable, you will build a trusting relationship with peers, teachers, and superiors around you to carry out tasks or be a person who can be looked up to and confided in. Studies have shown that we often judge other people based on their character. For instance, if you observe a person who always seems to be doing the right thing at all times we tend to classify those people with a highly ethical character and vice versa.

The last pillar is service. Service can be achieved in a multitude of ways ranging from service in our school to serving in the community. I strive to have a service mindset where I continually desire to help others in need and improve Era in a meaningful way. Although service hours are required to be a part of NHS, helping and serving others is one of my passions and is very fulfilling.

When I read 1 Peter 4:10, it encourages me daily to use the gifts I have received. I strive to keep academic integrity and remember the importance of putting in extra work in school. I would like to be a leader for peers around me and be someone others can look up to and confide in. Next, I would like to maintain a character of trustworthiness and sincerity. Lastly, I want to fuel my passion for service to others and my school.
